FAQ
At Muddy River Outdoors, our goal is to make adventure gear that’s simple, strong, and easy to live with. Every topper and camper we build is designed to be modular, affordable, and repairable, so you spend more time outdoors and less time in the shop.
What’s included in the Base Camper configuration?
· All-aluminum construction
· Black hammered powder-coated body
· Modular design for easy repair, upgrades, and customization
· Driver and passenger side doors
· Keyed locks on side and rear doors
· Full pop-up bed section (about 3’ in height)
· Four lifting struts
· All hardware, seals, and assembly components included
· Ready for assembly
· Mattress not included (Let’s be honest... you’d never let me pick your mattress at home, so why let me pick it for your camper?) We have four options to choose from, or bring the one you love.
· 1-year limited warranty
HINT: Your camper ships in a flat, easy-to-assemble crate. Everything you need is included, tools not provided.
What does the camper weigh?
· 335 lbs – Midsize truck models
· 359 lbs – Full-size truck models
Weights are based on base models with no accessories installed.
HINT: Accessories like roof racks, awnings, or solar panels will add a little extra weight, so plan accordingly.
How much headroom do I have inside?
You’ll have about 36 inches of standing room, depending on your truck size. Each upper bed section is nine feet long, leaving roughly three feet of open space for standing or storing gear.
You can move the bed sections on top of the front section to open up your entire truck bed when you’re not sleeping.
HINT: The modular design lets you quickly adjust your setup to sleep, load gear, or haul without removing the camper.
What size mattress can I use?
You can use a mattress up to 5 inches thick. A 4-inch mattress gives you enough space to leave your bedding and our quilted insulated tent walls in place when closing the camper.
HINT: A foam or roll-up mattress works best for closing the roof with bedding left inside.
How much weight can the roof support?
Good question, it depends on what you’re doing with it.
The roof operates using gas struts designed for about 30 lbs of weight on top. That keeps it easy to open and close.
If you plan to carry more gear (like solar panels, fishing rod holders, or other permanently mounted items), you can install stronger struts. We can help you choose the right ones, but keep in mind you shouldn’t exceed about 75 lbs of total adjustment from the factory setup.
HINT: If your roof weight changes often (kayaks, bikes, or items you don’t take every time), don’t swap out your struts. It’ll make it harder to operate when it’s empty. Take the heavy stuff off before opening the roof.
- Roof capacity: around 500 lbs total. You can’t operate it with that much weight, but it can safely hold it while closed or during transport.
- Eddy Topper (non-camper model): up to 750 lbs.
The tailgate area is usually the weak point, so adding bed stiffeners is a smart move if you’re hauling heavier loads.
How does the camper attach to my truck?
You’ll need:
· A good bulb-style truck cap seal
· Truck Topper/Bed clamps
We can order a set for you if you’d like, or you can easily grab them yourself. Honestly, we’re just trying to save you money. You can buy the same ones we use, usually cheaper, and the best place to find them is Amazon.
We’re happy to include them with your camper for a small upcharge if convenience matters more than price, just let us know before pickup.
HINT: Most customers prefer ordering their own so they can choose exactly what style or brand they like best.
Do I pay sales tax?
Yes if you pick it up from us or one of our dealers, or live in a state where we have a business presence.
No if you purchase online through our site and have it shipped directly to a location outside those states.
HINT: Online orders shipped out-of-state typically qualify as tax-exempt sales.
Is the camper assembled?
No... and yes.
We designed it for the DIY adventurer. If you can build with Legos, you can assemble this camper.
If you’d rather have us or one of our dealers handle it, we can do that for a small fee. Dealer pricing varies since they’re independent.
Our goal is simple, make it affordable, easy to build, and easy to repair. If something ever breaks, just order the replacement part and bolt it on. Every piece is replaceable.
HINT: The modular design also means repairs are quick and simple, no need to scrap a panel or replace an entire unit.
How long does assembly take?
We like to say: 'You, a buddy, and a case of beer... a long weekend!' Add another case, maybe add another day.
Once you know your way around the parts, it takes about 6 hours to assemble with basic tools.
HINT: Have your tools ready and hardware sorted before starting, it’ll save time and a few beers.
Are there shipping fees?
Yes if you want it shipped to a dealer or directly to your location.
No if you pick it up at our plant.
HINT: If you’re within driving distance, factory pickup is a great way to save on freight and meet the team.
